How did soy get such a bad reputation?

Over the years, we've come across strongly held opinions that soy isn't good for people, or for animals. However these views aren't always accompanied by specific concerns or scientific evidence explaining exactly why soy is considered harmful.

It's a sentiment we've heard before, and it raises an interesting question. Soy has carried a questionable reputation in some health circles for decades, so surely all that concern must have come from somewhere?

It did.

The interesting part is that soy's reputation wasn't created by one great scientific discovery showing that soy was harmful. Instead, several separate issues became tangled together: concerns about phytoestrogens, early animal research, thyroid medication, naturally occurring compounds in raw soybeans, genetically modified crops, herbicide use and highly processed foods.

Each contributed a little smoke. Over time, the message became simply: “soy is bad.”

The evidence tells a much more nuanced story.

How a Nutritious Bean Became Controversial

Soybeans have been eaten for centuries, particularly throughout Asia, in foods including tofu, tempeh, miso and natto. Nutritionally, soy provides high-quality complete plant protein, fibre, healthy unsaturated fats, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds called isoflavones.

In the West, soy enjoyed something of a health-food boom during the latter part of the twentieth century. Research into soy protein and cholesterol attracted considerable attention and soy products became increasingly mainstream. Then the pendulum began swinging in the opposite direction.

Questions emerged about soy's isoflavones, which are classified as phytoestrogens. Concerns were raised about thyroid function and anti-nutritional compounds. Soy also became closely associated with genetically modified agriculture and glyphosate-tolerant crops.

By the early 2000s, strongly anti-soy messages were circulating widely through natural-health books, websites and discussion groups. Social media later gave those messages an even bigger audience.

The problem was that very different questions about different forms of soy and different farming practices were increasingly treated as though they were all evidence against the soybean itself.

The Estrogen Story That Refuses to Go Away

Probably the most influential soy concern comes from the word phytoestrogen.

Soybeans contain isoflavones, plant compounds capable of interacting with certain estrogen receptors in the human body. Because of this, they became popularly described as “plant estrogens”, which very easily turned into the much simpler statement that soy contains estrogen.

It doesn't. Soy does not contain human estrogen.

Isoflavones have some structural similarities to estrogen, but their activity in the body is much weaker and more complex. Early laboratory and animal research quite reasonably led scientists to investigate whether these compounds might affect hormones, fertility or hormone-sensitive cancers.

The mistake came when scientific questions became public conclusions before enough human evidence was available.

One persistent example is the claim that soy lowers testosterone or “feminises” men. An updated meta-analysis examining 41 clinical studies found no significant effect of soy protein or soy isoflavones on total testosterone, free testosterone or measured estrogen hormones in men.

Breast cancer concerns followed a similar path. Because some breast cancers are estrogen-sensitive, researchers understandably investigated soy isoflavones closely. Human studies, however, haven't supported the blanket claim that eating soy causes breast cancer, with research generally finding neutral or, in some populations, favourable associations.

This doesn't turn soy into a treatment or preventative for cancer. It simply illustrates the difference between a reasonable scientific concern and what subsequent human research actually finds.

Thyroid Problems and “Anti-Nutrients”: More Half-Truths

Soy's thyroid reputation also has a genuine starting point. Soy can interfere with the absorption of thyroid medication if consumed too close to the medicine. That's important for someone taking thyroid replacement medication, but it isn't evidence that soy damages everybody's thyroid.

A systematic review and meta-analysis examining soy and thyroid function found no significant effect on the thyroid hormones T3 or T4, although a small increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was observed and its clinical significance was uncertain.

Then there are the so-called “anti-nutrients”.

Raw soybeans naturally contain compounds including phytates, lectins and trypsin inhibitors, which can interfere with nutrient availability or protein digestion when present in sufficient quantities. This is real, but the missing context is preparation.

We don't normally eat raw soybeans. Heating, cooking and fermentation change these compounds considerably, just as preparation makes a difference with many other legumes.

This is particularly relevant to Immunity Fuel because the soya beans in our Gluten Free formula are fermented. Fermentation uses microorganisms and their enzymes to transform components of the bean and can reduce compounds such as phytic acid and protease inhibitors, while also changing proteins and carbohydrates. Research has also reported improvements in protein digestibility in fermented soy.

Raw soy and fermented soy therefore shouldn't be discussed as though they're nutritionally identical.

GMO Soy, Roundup and Glyphosate: Where the Story Becomes More Complicated

Another major reason soy developed a poor reputation is its close association with genetically modified agriculture. Much of the GM soy grown internationally has been engineered to tolerate glyphosate-based herbicides such as Roundup. This allows the crop to survive while weeds are controlled, and the widespread adoption of these herbicide-tolerant crops has contributed to increased glyphosate use.

It's important to distinguish between the genetic modification of the soybean and the farming system surrounding it. Major scientific reviews have not found approved GM soy to be inherently unsafe to eat simply because it has been genetically modified. However, concerns about glyphosate use and residues are a separate issue and help explain why many health-conscious consumers remain wary of GM soy.

Glyphosate itself remains the subject of scientific debate. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, classifies it as “probably carcinogenic to humans”, while other international and national regulatory assessments have concluded that approved dietary exposures are unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk. In other words, it isn't accurate to say that GM soy is poisonous, but neither is it unreasonable for consumers to want to minimise their exposure to glyphosate-intensive farming systems.

This is one reason the distinction between GM soy and certified organic soy matters to us. What About Soy Being “Bad for Animals”?

The claim that soy is inherently unsuitable for animals has similar problems.

Raw soybeans contain compounds that affect digestibility, which is why soy used in animal nutrition is appropriately processed. Properly processed soybean ingredients are widely used precisely because soy provides concentrated protein and useful amino acids.

Studies involving dogs and cats have demonstrated that appropriately processed soy protein sources can be well digested. Fermented soybean meal has also been studied in animal nutrition because fermentation can reduce some anti-nutritional compounds.

That doesn't mean soy suits every animal. Allergies and individual dietary requirements exist, just as they do in humans. But saying soy is simply “bad for animals” isn't an accurate reflection of the nutritional evidence.

So, Where Was the “Fire” Behind All That Soy Smoke?

There wasn't one fire. There were several smaller, genuine issues that became merged into something much bigger.

Many of the concerns that shaped soy's reputation began with reasonable scientific questions, but the research that followed has provided much-needed context.

Soy's isoflavones don't behave like human oestrogen, and clinical studies haven't supported the feared hormonal effects of normal soy consumption.

Proper preparation and fermentation address many of the concerns associated with compounds naturally present in raw soybeans, while issues such as soy allergy and thyroid medication interactions apply to particular individuals rather than making soy an unhealthy food for everyone.

Even the controversy surrounding GM soy is largely a separate conversation about modern agricultural practices and herbicide use, rather than evidence that the soybean itself is harmful.

Importantly, none of these concerns means that soy itself is bad for people or animals.

Perhaps the most useful lesson is that asking whether something “contains soy” doesn't tell us nearly enough.

What kind of soy is it? How was it grown? How was it processed? And how much are we actually consuming?

Those are much better questions.
